Legal papers : of the Jefferson-Randolph families, 1793-1830.

The papers contain a bill of complaint and answer, affadavits, bond, opinion, and letter to Briscoe Gerard Baldwin, and court order in John H. Timberlake, James Magruder, and John B. Magruder vs. the Rivanna Navigation Company, an 1830 case involving a mill on the Rivanna River (formerly owned by Thomas Jefferson) and the interruption of necessary water flow by a Rivanna company lock. Also included are an indenture, 1793, between Thomas Mann Randolph and Thomas Mann Randolph, Jr. for the sale of Edge Hill plantation; an indenture between John Scott and Peter Field Jefferson for the sale of Albemarle County, Virginia, land; and an 1821 indenture of Thomas Jefferson Randolph and Jane Hollins Nicholas Randolph for sale of Shadwell and Pantops land.

Thomas Mann Randolph was born 1 October 1768 at Tuckahoe in Henrico County, Virginia, to Thomas Mann Randolph (1740-1793) and Anne Cary Randolph (1745-1789). Educated by private tutors until age 16, Randolph studied at the University of Edinburg from 1785 to 1788. James Barron Hope was born 23 March 1829 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the grandson of Commodore James Barron (1769-1851) and son of Wilton Hope and Jane Armistead (Barron) Hope (1791-1862).
